About The Event

We're so excited to have Susan Cotten, an amazing dental hygienist and speaker come present us in Utah! Let's celebrate National Oral Cancer Awareness Month together and learn about Oral Cancer, oral cancer screenings, and how we can save the lives of our patients through these screenings.

Course Description: Dentistry is faced with an epidemic of oropharyngeal cancer, and according to the Oral Cancer Foundation one person dies every hour of every day of oral and oropharyngeal cancer. The Human Papilloma Virus HPV- 16 now causes more oropharyngeal cancer than cervical cancer and approximately 10% of oral cancers have no known etiology. The Skin Cancer Foundation reports more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined.

In 2019 The American Dental Association amended their policy on early detection and prevention of oral cancer to include oropharyngeal cancer and cover all patients, not just those previously thought to be at an increased risk because of tobacco and alcohol use.” Dental professionals are uniquely positioned to screen for abnormalities, signs and symptoms, oral, and oropharyngeal cancer. This cancer epidemic demands that those positioned to screen, thoroughly review and expand their screening and assessment skills and establish an office system to increase early detection and decrease liability. This interactive course will discuss key components of an oral/oropharyngeal cancer office system utilizing the entire team, demonstrate updated and thorough screening techniques and documentation.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, attendees will be able to:

• Identify potential signs and symptoms of head and neck, oral, oropharyngeal cancer, and additional risk factors.

• Apply best practice clinical techniques for the head and neck oral, oropharyngeal cancer screening.

• Formulate a head and neck oral cancer office system.
